The Serengeti is Tanzania's largest and most celebrated national park — 14,750 square kilometres of open savanna, acacia woodland, and riverine forest. It holds one of the highest concentrations of wildlife on the continent year-round, and hosts the annual wildebeest migration, when over a million animals move between the Serengeti and the Masai Mara in Kenya. The short rains have passed and the southern Serengeti plains are green. This is calving season — hundreds of thousands of wildebeest calves are born within a few weeks, attracting predators. Excellent wildlife viewing with few tourists.
The most dramatic phase of the migration — the herds move north to the Mara River and attempt crossings under pressure from crocodiles. The northern Serengeti is the place to be. July to October is the peak dry season and the most popular time to visit overall.
The Serengeti's resident lion prides, cheetah, leopard, elephant, and giraffe are present all year. The Seronera valley in the central area is reliable at any time. Even during the long rains (April – May), game viewing remains good and rates are lower.
