Arusha is the main gateway city for Tanzania's northern circuit and sits at the foot of Mount Meru, the country's second highest peak. It offers a different set of day trip options from Moshi - Arusha National Park is a compact but diverse park with flamingos, giraffe, buffalo, colobus monkeys, and Mount Meru as a backdrop, and is the only place in Tanzania where you can do a walking safari. The Arusha Heritage Museum and the Cultural Heritage Centre are useful half-day visits for those interested in Tanzania's history and craft traditions. Mount Meru can be visited as a day hike on the lower slopes, though a full summit attempt requires 3-4 days.
