Moshi travel guide

Moshi is a mid-sized Tanzanian town at the southern base of Mount Kilimanjaro in the Kilimanjaro region. It is the most common base for Kilimanjaro climbers and is also a practical starting point for northern circuit safaris - Tarangire is approximately 2.5 hours away, Lake Manyara 2 hours, and Arusha 1 hour. The town has a functional infrastructure for international travellers: a range of accommodation from budget guesthouses to mid-range hotels, reliable communications, equipment hire shops for Kilimanjaro gear, and a small but lively town centre. It is quieter and less developed than Arusha, which makes it a pleasant place to acclimatise before a climb or recover after one.

Why base in Moshi

Moshi is quieter and more manageable than Arusha and has the advantage of being physically closer to Kilimanjaro - you can see the mountain from the town centre on a clear morning. Most Kilimanjaro operators, including Maluku Global Tours and Safaris, are based here. The town has good coffee (the Chagga people of the foothills have grown coffee under shade trees for generations), a useful market, and a range of restaurants. It is a comfortable place to spend a few days before or after a climb.

Day trips from Moshi

Moshi's position at the base of Kilimanjaro makes it an ideal base for day trips into the mountain's foothills. The Materuni Waterfalls and coffee farm tour is the most popular, followed by the Chemka Hot Springs and Lake Chala crater lake. For wildlife, Tarangire and Lake Manyara are reachable as long day trips. We arrange all day trips from Moshi with hotel pickup included.
